To those asking questions regarding how to change default printers on groups of machines: There are 2 good ways to do this, and I have successfully used both. 1.) On a reference machine, set up the printers as you wish. Copy /etc/cups/printers.conf and /etc/cups/* to all other computers using ARD that you wish to have a similar printer config. Restart CUPS, or the whole machine. Make sure that the permissions on the files are correct on the client machines. If you copy the files from a reference machine to your machine running ARD, and then to client machines the permissions might be incorrect. 2.) Using lpadmin (and the send unix command in ARD), you can add printers, change defaults, etc. You can man lpadmin, or go to the CUPS man pages at http://localhost:631 to find out the proper syntaxes and switches for your particular deployment. Also, the printers.conf file is an editable file. You can change the default printer by changing the appropriate keys in the file. For instance, you might have an entry for a printer called "PRINTER." It'll appear as <PRINTER>. To make it default, add "DefaultPrinter" ahead of it to make it look like <DefaultPrinter PRINTER>. Make sure there are no other DefaultPrinter values. Hope this helps some... ~~ Quade Boman | Systems Administrator | Beaverton School District | email@hidden |
