ARD2.2 Client stopped working

I have a 10.3.9 eMac with ARD 2.2 Client installed which I administer occasionally using ARD 2.2 Admin. Three weeks ago, it stopped responding to ARD connections (there has been no attempt at installing ARD3 on either client or admin machine; and no 3rd party remote packages such as Chicken of the VNC have been installed). Upon attempting to connect, I'm getting continuous "Lost connection, attempting to reconnect" messages from the GUI and when I ssh into the target machine and look at its system.log file, I'm seeing this error message repeated over and over again:

Jul 23 01:39:41 freddykrueger /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent: ARD Agent: RFB Server exited quickly after starting - probable failure.
Jul 23 01:39:46 freddykrueger /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/MacOS/AppleVNCServer: ***START RFBSERVER
Jul 23 01:39:51 freddykrueger /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/MacOS/AppleVNCServer: ***START RFBSERVER
Jul 23 01:39:53 freddykrueger /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent: RFB server failed too many times - giving up

What is the "RFB server" that's failing??? It obviously has something to do with ARD but I'm not familiar enough with the guts of ARD 2.2 to diagnose it further. In an attempt to flush this problem out, I reinstalled ARD 2.2 Client from the mpkg file that I generated from ARD 2.2 Admin to no avail. I have also tried to use the CLI command "diskutil repairPermissions disk0s3" just in case there are permissions errors to fix but that comes back with a clean slate (relatively speaking--there are just the usual "special" permissions reported for /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays, /private/var/at/jobs and /private/var/at/spool and /System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util). Meanwhile, ARD 2.2 Admin connections to other ARD 2.2 Client machines on the same network as the problem machine are still working fine. Any suggestions aside from a total nuke and pave of the entire OS?
