How 'bout you just go to the Preferences window. Click the Tasks tab. Uncheck "Always change focus to active task".

Problem solved.

Or, alternatively, double click a list to open it in a separate window and execute tasks from this window.

Or more exactly, the fact that the current task takes over the pane where my selected list was, and there doesn't appear to be any way to get back besides manually clicking on my previously selected list (I have a lot of lists.) Even when I do go back to the list, the selected machines are no longer selected... and sometimes I want to do a second operation on the same set of machines.

So I can already hear the suggestions, make a temp list before you run your task. Yep, but it was a lot more convenient in 2.x with the tasks in a separate window(s).
