I have several iMacs running 10.4.2 & 10.4.3 here that I wish to
upgrade to 10.4.8 via ARD -- specifically, using the "softwareupdate -
ia" sent (as root) as a UNIX command. The trouble is, there appears
to be an incompatibility between running softwareupdate from the
command line and running the Software Update GUI app as admin.
Observe the output from ARD when sending the command:

The QuickTime update never seems to finish; I can let it sit there
for hours and it won't get any farther. So I logged on to the machine
via ARD, and saw this in the Console:
Mac OS X Version 10.4.8 (Build 8L127)

So, it looks like QuickTime is trying to update some system libraries
but the OS won't "let" it. Interstingly, if I cancel the update via
ARD and reboot the machine, it comes up successfully as a 10.4.8
machine. Has anyone else encountered this? I haven't tried using
"softwareupdate -ia" on anything more recent than 10.4.3...
