Re: Where is the authentication data saved?

Hmm. I <cough> often <cough> backup my home directory using rsync to an external USB drive, and have restored it to another machine, with both ARD lists and username/password info intact.

I *wish* this info were stored in the login.keychain, but I think it's actually kept in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist. When I type "defaults read ~/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.RemoteDesktop" into Terminal, I get a bunch of output, including a key called "accessCredentials". I bet that's it.

A very logical idea, but even after ditto-ing that directory back from a
mounted TM backup and logout/login they all have a Current Status column of
"No User Name and Password".

Drat. Time Machine *almost* works.

Steve,

just a guess ... could it be something in /var/db/RemoteManagement/?

Best wishes,

Yes, the keychain came back. My Apple Remote Desktop entry has just
an
application password- no sign of credentials to log into my clients.

I believe that information is stashed in your account's Keychain and
is an entry named "Apple Remote Desktop". Were you able to recover
your Keychain from your backup?

Hi all,

My MacBookPro just suffered a harddrive meltdown, so I restored
from a
TimeMachine backup into another MBP. Most of my data is back, but
I'm
having some difficulties with ARD.

Needing to re-enter the serial number was a surprise (but no big
deal), but
after I got it running again, it remembers my computer groups, but
doesn't
have authentication information stored for any of them.

I re-restored ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist
again from
a separate backup source, but that didn't bring them back.

Yes, I could re-enter my credentials for all the clients, but I'd
rather not
if there's another file I could restore. Anybody know which file
stores the
logins and passwords for my managed clients?
