Hello:
I'm not currently an ARD user... I'm trying to determine if it's the
right tool for what I hope to do.
My Dad is on the verge of retirement, has always had IT assistance with
his computer (PC) at work, but is almost helpless with managing his PC at
home... and probably cannot be taught to do so at this point.
In addition, I have essentially no PC skills myself. I have 'pretty
good' skills with Macs, including basic system configuration,
maintenance, AppleScript, and etc.
I've been thinking of encouraging my Dad to buy a Mac, so that I might be
able to manage basics on his machine at a distance
(California/Wisconsin). Part of the attraction of ARD for me is that (as
I understand it), I'd have full graphical access to 'see' (and control)
his computer... almost as if I was on my own machine. I don't think I'd
be able to do it 'blind' - with AppleScript alone... I'd need to see the
results of what I'd done... and correct as necessary.
My primary question is whether ARD is well suited to these 'ambitions'?
Second - (and don't laugh too loud) - I'm currently on a dialup
connection... in a rural area with only (fairly) costly broadband options
at present. Except for large direct file transfers, would I have any
chance of being able to use other features of ARD over dialup? I *can*
upgrade to broadband if necessary, but might defer it if I can manage
basics without.
If I can convince my Dad to try a Mac, the responsibility for assisting
him and keeping his computer in good shape would be mine... and become an
ongoing project. I just want to be reasonably certain that ARD would
allow me to take on the task.
