OK. I've finally been able to download this, and have an idea as to
what caused my download issue.
For the curious, I am using Safari on 10.2.8. No funky browsers, no
firewalls, no strange configurations. But I am also using a cheesy
Portuguese cable operator (the incumbent) who insists on forcing
traffic through a "transparent" HTTP proxy. This causes me endless
grief with Software Update as well (truncated files in the cache), to
the extent where I usually download updates manually ('curl' is your
friend - learn to use it).
Opening a Remote Desktop window to a Windows XP box with a connection
to a different ISP allowed me to download the tar file on the first
try. And yeah, I am considering changing ISPs - unfortunately, suing
them is not an option, and it's the only cable provider in around half
the country...
What happened (and I confirmed this with iptraf on my Linux firewall)
was that my Mac was just getting a cached redirect to the login page,
since the transparent proxy picked up on the fact that the post-login
URL was the same I had tried before being redirected to the login form
- it then dutifully redirected me to the login form again... And again,
and again, and again...
Although it isn't Apple's fault, I suggest checking if this sort of
page employs the "Pragma: no-cache" HTTP directive and if further
anti-caching mechanisms could be added to both the ADC/Apple Open
Source downloads and (hopefully) Software Update...
OK. Now for a quick question: Anyone have working init scripts to
install mDNSResponder as a daemon on RedHat 9? I can surely write them
from scratch, but if anyone has them handy...
