Yes, I am specifying the port; that's required when registering a
service with JmDNS. I do see what may be a problem, but I hope not...

From an email from Jens Alfke on 2/2/04:

Well, according to Rendezvous Browser, txtvers is *not* first for my
service (I'm sure you can guess which one that is by the name). Is
that causing iChat to fall back to the older behavior of looking to
port.p2pj for the port number?

The DNS-SD spec says that "txtvers" is required to be the first key, but I'm not sure how iChat specifically handles it. I'm pretty sure that iTunes and iPhoto don't require it to be first. I would be in favor of changing this from a MUST to a SHOULD, but if iChat requires that txtvers be first, then that's what you'll need to do.

Another thing is that your host name has multiple labels, as in "animal.int.bravo5.org.local." where as mDNS host names should be in the form "single-dns-label.local." I guess JmDNS allows you to register multi-label host names but they're really illegal. Maybe that's the problem?
