What version of Mac OS X are these machines running?

Specifically, Panther (10.3) has a lot of optimizations in mDNSResponder that greatly reduce mDNS traffic.

Also, you didn't say whether anyone uses iChat, but there are also optimizations in iChat AV.

He reckons its for ad hoc networks and and not Enterprise
type LANs like ours. (about 3000 hosts, with approx 400 Macs)

We have many subnets of that size at Apple, and as far as I know mDNS traffic has not been a problem since the transition to Panther.
