Apple invests a lot of resources developing technology, and like most
large companies, Apple has IPR to protect that investment. However,
unlike many large companies, Apple makes much of its work available to
the open source community through Darwin, and under the terms of the
Apple Public Source License (APSL 2.0) you get automatic no-cost licenses
to any relevant Apple patents. I encourage you to read the full APSL for
yourself, but here's one small excerpt on this subject:
<http://www.opensource.apple.com/apsl/2.0.txt>
>... Apple hereby grants You, effective on the date You accept
>this License and download the Original Code, a world-wide,
>royalty-free, non-exclusive license, to the extent of Apple's
>Applicable Patent Rights and copyrights ...
