Re: Rendezvous - odd entries

Hi Andrew,

Firing up the Rendezvous browser on OS X, I notice something odd. There are services named "_BEE7007[snip 14 chars]._udp" and "_MacOSXDupSuppress._tcp". I was under the impression from the DNS-SD draft that service names were 14 character strings, yet both of these clearly exceed that limit.

http://files.dns-sd.org/draft-cheshire-dnsext-dns-sd.txt , section 19.

Thoughts?

If names over 14 characters are allowed, I need to revise a bunch of code.

DNS-SD recommends that service types be 14 characters or less so that we can register these service types with IANA in the future. However, since these are just DNS labels, they can theoretically be up to 63 bytes. The "BEE707..." service type is used by BBEdit for copy protection. MacOSXDupSuppress is used by Open Directory in Mac OS X, and unfortunately they picked a name that was too long. We plan on discontinuing the MacOSXDupSuppress service advertisement in a future version of Mac OS X.

Best Regards,

-Marc
