I don't spot an obvious way to unregister a service once it has been registered other then shutting down the application. Am I missing something obvious?

Depends on your definition of "obvious," but when you register you get back a DNSSDRegistration object. Sending it the stop() message will deregister the service. This deregisters the service immediately, but you should then null out any references to that object so that it can get garbage-collected.

cheers,
