If you install Rendezvous Technology Preview for Windows, you should
get a namespace provider component installed that recognizes .local
names and resolves them correctly using local mDNSResponder. There
seems to be a performance issue with the way this provider gets
installed. If "something.local" is present on the network, the direct
mDNS query for its IP address is almost instanteneous. But when you do
it via standard Windows resolution that involves all installed
namespace providers, it takes approx. 3 seconds on my machine for no
apparent reason.
This component and the tool that installs it are in CVS. See
mDNSResponder/mDNSWindows/mdnsNSP and
mDNSResponder/mDNSWindows/NSPTool. Caveat emptor. Last time I tried
playing with those, I ended up reinstalling TCP/IP on my workstation
:)
