Re: Ipv6 support in 10.3.6

Hi Randy,

This has probably been asked numerous times, but I'm new to the list, and I
didn't see it in the last two months of list archive on the Apple site.

I don't think this has been discussed before so it's good that you asked.

I am trying to use rendezvous in an embedded network appliance that has IPv6
enabled, but my Panther 10.3.6 system doesn't seem to use IPv6 for
rendezvous.

Is there some trick to getting Rendezvous on Panther 10.3.6 to listen for
IPv6-capable Rendezvous-enabled services?

For network efficiency reasons, mDNSResponder currently doesn't do service discovery over IPv6 when the machine has a routable IPv4 address configured on that interface. We currently assume that if the network is handing out IPv4 addresses or if you have a manually assigned routable IPv4 address, then it's likely that all devices on the network will be able to communicate over IPv4. We don't expect to see any IPv6-only devices for a while. So you can enable Rendezvous discovery over IPv6 by turning off IPv4 in the Network Preference Panel, or by manually setting your IPv4 address to 169.254.x.x.

Hope that helps.
-Marc
