Re: Rendezvous is changing to...

Thanks for your opinion. You can be the first, and the last.

Ok, so clearly you don't want this discussed.

I wanted to be the second to comment on how terrible it is, but I need a bit of clarification, first. Is it the official position of Apple that opinions which are critical of a marketing decision as lame as the Bonjour name change are forbidden on this mailing list, or is it just your personal desire to moderate "an entire thread about name change opinions"...? And whether this request comes from you personally, or is Apple's policy, would you also object to a big long thread praising the wisdom and oohing and ahhing at the unbridled cleverness of this decision?

I apologize for the heavy handed approach, requesting that people not comment on the name change. This list is designed to discuss technical issues regarding the technology, and normally has a high signal to noise ratio. There is no hidden Apple agenda to ban dissent and criticism. As the moderator of the list, I just wanted to avoid a lengthy discussion about how terrible you think the name is, because it doesn't really matter at this point. What really matters is how great the technology is.

I'd rather avoid an entire thread about name change opinions,
even though. I'm sure everyone has an opinion.

You can easily avoid the thread without restricting the free speech of others. You can simply ignore the thread in your mailreader. You can killfile the communications of those whom you wish to ignore. You can turn off the computer. If you wish to *defend* the new name, feel free to participate in the discussion and do just that. But to attempt to *protect* it by imply that opinions with which you disagree are not suitable for this list is sort of Orwellian of you isn't it, especially as a representative of Apple...

Agreed. Next time I'll just unplug my computer and take out the battery.

... As much as you may want to, please
avoid commenting about the name and post your opinions on another
forum. Thanks.

Best Regards,

-Marc

For the record, on which forums *may* we post our opinions, and which ones were restricted to technical discussions of the software? I must have missed that provision in the mailing list welcome message.... Are there sanctioned, segregated lists designated for alternately praising or criticizing marketing decisions such as this?

I don't know if there's any approved forums hosted by Apple, but there's many other forums on the internet that are unmoderated and you can criticize all you want. Again, if you feel that your criticism is beneficial to this list, please post away.

Best Regards,

-Marc

Bonjour,

Along with the official announcement of the Mac OS X Tiger release
date...

We've finally made the name change public. The technology
formerly known as Rendezvous is now called Bonjour.

<http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/>

We'll be transitioning our web sites, documentation and mailing
list over to the new name, and we encourage everyone who's
currently using the word Rendezvous in their products to switch
over to Bonjour as well. In order to make the name change a
success, we need everyone to come on board and switch to the new
name. I'm also happy to announce that the Darwin CVS server will
be going live later today and we'll be restarting the Bonjour logo
licensing program later this month. If you have any questions
about the name change and how it affects your company, please send
your questions or comments to email@hidden.

Best Regards,

-Marc
