Perhaps the following should be posted to x11-users also?
There are some X11 and 10.4 (and IDL) issues that I'm experiencing.
I'm curious if others are and if any workaround have been found yet.
Also, one of them is a potentially serious bug that I would like to
alert people to (assuming someone out there can verify it).
X11 does not raise the windows if you CMD+Tab to it... To duplicate:
1) Open X11.app
2) Open some xterms
3) Open something else (Safari).
4) Bring Safari to the front
5) CMD+Tab or Click on the X11 Dock icon
X11 now is 'active', and an xterm will have keyboard focus, but the
window will not be brought to the foreground.
Click 2x on the Dock icon, or hit F10 2x and X11 will raise itself.
Not a big deal.
A 2nd (related I presume?) problem is the reason I am posting this
in the sci-vis list, as it concerns IDL.
The graphics window *will not* accept focus no matter what I do.
Widget-based graphic windows work properly, so well-coded and/or
major applications will work (ex: the IDL demo). But normal plot
windows will not.
Most of the time this is not a problem. Actually it is a feature.
Normally when I type "IDL> window" the focus goes to the graphics
window, and I need to move my mouse to get it back to the xterm
where I am typing. I had previously written this list about 4
months ago trying to find a way to stop this. Now it behaves the way
I like.
But it is a bit too extreme, as the graphics window not only will
not accept focus, it does not generate events either as far as I can
tell. Actually, that is not entirely true: xwininfo does respond if
I click on the IDL graphics window. But IDL procedure do not get the
events. This means ZOOM and CURSOR and other IDL procedures that
wait for window events just hang. I have to kill the IDL process in
order to recover.
So, if you have IDL code that uses non-widget window-interactive
code you might want to wait to upgrade to 10.4, or use a different
X11 than the Apple X11.app (v1.1). Assuming, of course, that this
bug is not specific to my box or config files.
