Re: PPC 970 = G5

Yes, PowerPC 970 = G5. Within Apple the chip family is called the G5, while within IBM (who designed and is manufacturing the chip), it is referred to as the PowerPC 970. (Take a look at <http://www-3.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/products/PowerPC_970_Microprocessor> for some deeper articles on the chip.

The reason I make the distinction between chip and family is that there will be a number of IBM chip designations including 970 and 980 that will all fall under the Apple G5 processor family moniker. The same sort of marketing coding existed beneath the G3 and G4 processor families. For instance, the G4 which was designed and produced by Motorola include the PowerPC 7400, 7410, 7440, and 7450. Each of these chip numbers have a different feature set, like power saving features, cache sizes, etc. However, the overall architecture among the G4 family is the same. It takes some digging to determine which of these actual chip numbers is in each Mac.

Hope this helps,
Albert

Out of curiosity I looked from some of the G5 technical notes on the apple site.
Nowhere does it refer to it as 'ppc 970'. Presumably it must be 970 = G5 as it's
64 bit and it's now a power4

- is this marketing gone mad ? Kind of amusing how the old name has been completely
erased from history.

There never was a term "ppc 970". The term is "G5". The term has ALWAYS been "G5". Please report to the Ministry of Information TODAY!
