Re: Viewing postscript

I said:
Schubert_it, who makes the PDF plugin for OS X browsers,
now supports postscript.

Richard Cook pointed out:
Ironically, in the Keynote today, guess what Steve unveiled? Preview apparently now does "on-the-fly" postscript to pdf conversion.

I just saw this after I posted. Great news. But, the Schubert plugin has the advantage of displaying online pdf and postscript from within your browser, which some people might prefer. It is also free, available now, and runs in 10.2. I'm not particularly motivated to upgrade to 10.3 at work given what I've seen so far (would be nice at home tho'), so a 10.2 solution is important.

As for ps2pdf, this is a bit cumbersome for a lot of situations and a lot of people. It is a command-line program, not a gui. Several steps are involved: download ps file, go to Terminal, find the downloaded file, run ps2pdf, open preview, find the pdf file.... Versus click on a link or drag and drop an icon. However, if you had a nice Applescript that would automate the process, ps2pdf and Preview might be the ideal solution until OS X 10.3. Should be quite easy to write.

MacGhostview, or the free version, MacGhostviewX (which has disappeared), is pretty good, but it's slow and awkward for multi-page documents; you can't just scroll thru like you can in Preview or Safari.

Warren reports loosing the curser after using the plugin in a dual monitor setup. I've been using the new plugin for a while yet without encountering this, and I also have a dual monitor setup (powerbook plus monitor). So hopefully this is an isolated problem.
