Re: Viewing postscript

I thought I would inject a cautionary note if you are contemplating using the pdf plug-in to view postscript using Safari (or any other browser). I tried it on a modest size .ps file and lost my mouse pointer in my main screen. My second monitor displayed the mouse pointer fine; it disappeared as soon as it was moved into the main monitor. I needed to restart the window manager (or whatever it is called) to get it back.

Just thought I might mention this (earlier versions worked fine for pdf viewing in Safari).

Some time ago there was a discussion on viewing postscript files on OS X.
At that time, no really good alternative emerged. I just found the perfect
solution: Safari! Schubert_it, who makes the PDF plugin for OS X browsers,
now supports postscript. Get the latest version (1.2) here:

You'll also need a Ghostscript installation, for which there is a link if
you don't already have it.

If you have Ghostscript, you can do ps2pdf. Why is that not a "good alternative"? Anyway, good to know about the update to the plugin.

Ghostscript seems to function well for many - but it was an endless source
of frustration for me, both under OS 9.x and under OS X. I finally bought
the $20 shareware MacGhostView and was a happy camper. It includes a half
dozen PostScript-related utilities, has been totally trouble free, and will
continue to keep me going until Panther finally shows up.
