Re: G5 Benchmarks

Craig, thanks for the benchmarks/testing! The vector performance is fantastic!!!

I've already ordered a Dual 2GHz G5 and will be ordering an 8 CPU cluster (hopefully Xserve G5 when they are available) at the end of the summer.

While the CPU geek in me admires the MFLOPS/cycle I think they're useless in the real world. While Mac heads may think its cool, its really besides the point especially as Intel will always have a higher clock speed. They need to do that to survive. If a faster processor does not come out every 3-6 months there is no need, or marketing gimmick, to buy a new one.

I would like to see the best performance that can be had from each processor. This is the Sci-Tech mailing list after all and I think several, if not all, of us can get the performance out of the processor we have to work with, whether they be G4, G5, Pentium4, Power4, etc.

I don't know what would need to be done on the Intel side but if you do a Part 2 can you consider this?

Also, does anyone know roughly when PowerPC 970 aware tools will be arriving?

Thanks,
Sean

Begin forwarded message:

Folks,

I was able to get some benchmarks from a G5 system and wrote up a short
white paper documenting results. It's available online here:

I hope the info might be useful to some of you (it was to me).

Regards,
Craig
