6) To the best of my knowledge, it's impossible for Fink to cause a

Fink certainly makes use of some of Apple's recent gcc extensions when
it
builds software, and it has begun to do things -- such as prebinding
libraries
-- which don't work properly with every software package. The poster
who
mentioned a gcc problem with Fink is invited to contact me directly to

discuss whatever the problem was.
I should have been more clear with my complaints about gcc and tar....
My rant
was meant to be about unix-y installer systems in general and not fink
in particular.
My problems with gcc and tar were from installers from the gnu-darwin
project
and not fink.
I admit fink is a Good Thing and I'm glad it's out there. I'd rather
not use it
because I don't like the way it does some things. However, It's good
it's there
and I am grateful for all of the effort put into it.
I was too sloppy in writing my rant. I meant to complain in general
about developers
that try to treat OS X as just another Linux distribution and too
equate that
behavior with those who develop for it just like it was OS 9. Of
course, both
groups of developers mentioned above are really just imaginary strawmen
that I can get
mad at when an installer gunks up my system :)
Anyway, fink is good, open source is good... t'sall good. -- just not
insanely
great :)
Me, I just really like NeXT and the NeXTish things in OS X and want to
see more
developers take advantage of them :)
