Good point. But that's not a good solution for people porting from other platforms, because they cannot know in advance that libfoo lives in /usr/local/lib. That is usually discovered by the compiler dynamically, using the so-called "polluted" method of searching the -L paths and compiler defaults.

Um, you do realize that it is possible to add e.g. /usr/local/libfoo.dylib
to your link line, right? That would not 'polute' anything.
