Sigh - After I said I'd be quiet, I'm dragged back in by a mild attack.

Whoah, slow down there cowboy. Nowhere was I talking about proprietary,
closed-source, non-free, yada yada yada software.
I'm merely talking about distributing outside of the fink system, no matter
what the commercial impetus. From a local point of view, I'm thinking of
open source scientific visualization and data processing software that we've
produced for years for UNIX. Most UNIX people have never heard of fink. I
hope that changes.
Fink is a wonderful system if you want to deliver your software as a fink
package. It's as useful as apt is on Linux. Your dependencies are handled
for you and everything is happy.
But remember to consider that there might be software developers who wish to
distribute their non-commercial software as they have done for decades -
outside of fink. There are plenty of other ways of doing it.
For the record, I work for a DOE National Laboratory and have released
nothing but open source software for the last 10 years. I find it odd that
you refer to me as a "corporate welfare queen."
