Re: Why I like fink

Fink is a wonderful system if you want to deliver your software as a fink
package.

Nobody that I am aware of develops software specifically FOR fink (apart from the stuff to run fink itself). People develop software for a variety of unix platforms. fink merely provides convenient installation scripts that do whatever hacking is necessary to get the software to install on Darwin. In other words, you can develop your software for Linux or freeBSD or Irix or whatever flavor of unix you choose to, and someone with the fink project (or you) then does the rest. The point is it should be making life for generic unix developers EASIER because they don't have to take into account the ideosyncracies of Darwin. If the gripe is that Apple doesn't provide the libraries that fink enables one to install on an as-needed basis, shouldn't the argument be with Apple? (As others have pointed out, this isn't specific to fink; it applies to any other package manager like DarwinPorts that attempts to fill the same gaps.)

But remember to consider that there might be software developers who wish to
distribute their non-commercial software as they have done for decades -
outside of fink.

The whole purpose of fink is to make those packages available. Developers don't distribute multi-platform software within fink, as far as I am aware.

For the record, I work for a DOE National Laboratory and have released
nothing but open source software for the last 10 years. I find it odd that
you refer to me as a "corporate welfare queen."

Then you will doubtless be quite relieved that it was not you to whom I was referring. I had hoped the context would have made that clear. Sorry if it did not.
