I am currently using an iMac for work (20inch PPC), but an HP laptop
for the AKTA. I originally wanted to do what you are thinking about,
but couldn't find anyone who had info about it and didn't feel
comfortable going it alone. Right now, I'd say the HP is working
fine and I'm OK with it. But, it's running XP and is not connected
to the internet. It runs the AKTA and is USB connected to a printer,
so it's the simplest way to go. Everything works fine, is stable and
the only glitch I can see is that the connection to the 950 brain
prevents the HP from going into sleep mode. But, I run the system
for hours or days and shut it completely down when done.
Right now, with 8 open applications on my mac, the thought of trying
to maintain a windows emulation and switch between Windows/Unicorn
and the rest of my Mac stuff seems risky. I'm happy with the HP
running the AKTA and my mac being my computer. I think if I had the
INtel Mac, I'd feel the same. If I used bootcamp and windows, I
wouldn't be able to use the mac side of the system without rebooting,
and I can run the AKTA non stop all day with multiple samples. It
would be serious downtime to lock up my mac running the UNicorn
software and not be able to do anything else.
FWIW, I use an old FPLC for low pressure preparative gel filtration
and the new AKTA for desalting, ion exchange and analytical gel
filtration of bacterially produced proteins. Everything is done is
8M urea.
