Re: Mac clusters in practice

Konrad,

I can answer at least the first issue. Timbuktu, at least the later versions >8.X??, can support connections over ssh. Only the SSH port needs to be opened in the corporate firewall. I have done this successfully here and used it for a couple of years. I am using version 8.6 but I believe it was available in a couple of earlier versions.

Set the TB2 preferences for "TCP Security" to "Only Accept Secure (SSH) Incoming Connections". And it works with ONLY an ssh connection.

I'll leave the firewall/ssh tunneling question for others, but I believe there is a way to only accept local (ie localhost) connections and tunnel from any port to any port. You may have to set up tunnels on both the server and client.
