If you're well satisfied with X11, then why not use that on MacOSX?
I believe X11 doesn't come installed as standard with OSX, but the
DVD that comes with your Macs has an optional installer for X11.
Also, you can download it from Apples website.
X11 works fine indeed, but most GUI programs for the Mac don't use
X11. With OpenSource programs it would probably be possible (though
tedious) to compile everything for X11, but we are also considering
getting a Mathematica license, and I doubt that Wolfram provides an
X11 version for the Mac.
machine. I don't know if this would fix your French keyboard
problem. But can you not set the keyboard layout on the cluster
machines to be the same as the keyboard you're using with your
desktop?
With free VNC, that doesn't work.
Konrad.
