Re: Remembering FORTRAN founder John Backus (December 3, 1924 – March 17, 2007)

On the topic of free FORTRAN compilers, I thought it might be be worthwhile remembering John Backus, the engineer who invented it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Backus

I also found this humorous blog post on the subject: "What does the hot girl at the party think of your programming language?" http://clintonforbes.blogspot.com/2007/03/what-does-hot-girl-at-party-think-of.html

cheers,
Alok

I have been using ifort on my Intel Mac for a year, and it works
well; however, I have an issue with my code, MPI, and netcdf.
Basically, I cannot get more than 1 MPI thread to work using ifort
(everything compiles fine, just hangs during execution). It works
fine with g95, gfortran, and the Absoft Beta--for some reason, it
won't with ifort. The Absoft intel fortran compiler should be
released in the coming weeks, as far as I know.

PGI is also getting ready to release a beta version of their compiler
for Intel Macs, you can apply to test it at their website.

For free, you have: gfortran, g77, and g95. All of which are
available for both PPC and Intel. I've used them all.

Cheers,
Brian

Just a couple of thoughts:
1.  Have a good think before you install Fink or Darwinports.  Once
installed you are no longer using a standard Darwin distribution but
a Fink or Darwinports system.  A lot of your libraries will become
non-standard.  This may be what you, but it might not be.  I don't
find them necessary, and Fink has caused me problems in the past.

2.  The current distributions of the R statistics  package for the
Mac includes a full gcc C/C++/gfortran compiler which is used to
build the distribution.  This compiler works well and understands
Apple specific gcc options like '-arch'.

3.  Apple's developer web site has a lot of good stuff about porting
autoconf based and other open source/Linux apps to OS X.

Have fun
