Re: [apple scitech] Cross-platform database/data analysis suggestions?

I've been watching this, and it strikes me that there might be another approach that is at least worth thinking about. What about using a package like Real Basic to build the data input front end. It comes with tools that make building dedicated-GUI input windows pretty much just cut and paste.

I haven't used it for a few years, but REALbasic is really quite a nice tool. An advantage for your people, David, is that it's similar to Visual Basic, which ought to make it easier for them to pick up than Python. The GUI-building tools are the best I've ever used. It's not as inexpensive as it once was, but they do have a free demo.

With each new data input complete. Real Basic would write the data to a flat-file, which the subsequent analysis program would read and append to the real data file. Any number of tools that have already been suggested here could perform that operation trivially, and running relatively canned analysis on a flat file of 25 or 50 or even 100 MB is no big deal with almost any of them.

REALbasic can talk directly to 'real' databases, too, and should be fast enough to do the number-crunching itself. Back in the day (8 or 9 years ago), I was using it to develop cross-platform Windows/Mac molecular graphics apps for in-house use.
