speech synthesizer is selected, and Apple ships just the one--MacinTalk.

What is the difference between Macintalk Pro and Macintalk 3? Neither one is the original Macintalk (which didn't use voice files and sounded absolutely horrible).

Macintalk 3 is formant synthesis, i.e., speech is generated from general principles about how a human voice works (mixing in sampled sounds in some of the voices).

Macintalk Pro is concatenative synthesis: Recordings of an actual human being were cut up into small elements and those elements are reassembled to form the generated speech.

I also recall Macintalk 2 worked up until about Mac OS 8. Boy that sounded awful :)
