More specifically, the MDItem reference specifically mentions it's not
supported (in the very next sentence after the extract you quoted).

It calls the GetMetadataForFile() function in the importer for the
given file. Importers are built on the CFPlugin architecture.

But if it really is a .txt file, you might be better off writing your
own importer ;)
