Re: Streaming MP3s?

The MP3 files need to be hinted, and could probably stand to be saved with the .mov extension, since they aren't really MP3 files anymore, in the stricter sense of the world.

I just got DSS installed on RH7.1 and it seems to be up and running,
web admin working nicely.
It looks great, I'm excited.

I am primarily interested in delivering on-demand MP3 stream via
RTSP/RTP (not HTTP). I am still not totally clear whether this is
possible with DSS?

e.g., rtsp://<myserver>/song.mp3
(Playable by any client supporting RTSP/RTP standard.)

If this is possible, then can you give clarification concerning
creating the playlist?
I am familiar with the old-fashioned M3U/PLS playlist idea used for
HTTP streaming. Is it a similarly simple process?

Thanks for any help,

QTSS doesn't stream unhinted MP3 files on-demand... you can accomplish
this with an ordinary Web server. However, there are two ways to stream
MP3s from QTSS:

1. Hint the MP3s and stream them to QuickTime Player;
2. Create a playlist with your MP3s in it, and listen to it with any
MP3 player

Obviously the second option is usually the one people take, because
it's the most compatible. Check in the documentation and list archives
under "creating playlists" for more information. You're also free to
email me with any questions.

I apologize if this is not the correct forum for such a message, but I
cannot find anywhere else on the planet with help for the DSS...

I have the DSS server v4.0 installed and running fine. I can point the
QuickTime player at

rtsp://<myserver>/sample_300kbit.mov and it plays back fine.

However, I cannot get *any* client to play the sample.mp3 in the same
media directory. I have tried Quicktime, WinAmp and Realplayer, and all
of them say the file is a unrecognized format. I even tried another MP3
in the hopes that the sample.mp3 was corrupt, but no go.

I thought DSS was supposed to be able to stream MP3 files? If it is,
why can't I get it to work? What is the secret?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Jim Michael
