Mysteries of QT 6.0

I have been trying to figure out the peculiarities of the way QT 6.0 handles streaming media. We are trying to test a home-grown RTSP/RTP server serving MP4 hinted files with QT 6.0 playing the role of the client.
Using "mp4creator" i hinted files of type "divx", & "avi". I then served these files over RTSP/RTP to the QT 6.0 client, & strangely enough QT 6.0 is unable to recognise the media type (when i click on "Media info")& also does not pop-up a new window, but the play bar still moves.
Thinking that this could be a problem with our server, i served these same files using DSS & the same thing happened, no output & no media type recognition. In fact i tried hinting files of type MP3, & still QT is not able to recognise the media type or play back the file. In fact the only hinted file i could serve were the sample files provided with DSS ("sample_100kbit.mp4").
Anyone out there could tell me what formats of files can QT 6.0 handle, i would really appreciate some help here, or do i need to download some codecs as plugins to handle divx or avi files converted to MP4??
Thanks,
Kind Regards,
Sachin.
