Folks,
Would really appreciate some help here, since we are unable to proceed
with testing our RTSP server serving MP4 hinted files. I am adding
some more queries here. If this mail does not belong here in this
forum (which could probably explain the pointed silence to my
queries!!!), please do forgive me & point me to the right forum.
1) QT is apparently not able to recognize the format of the streams
being played. The presentation is being played to the full with no
output either audio/visual, with the Movie-Info window reflecting ",
160 X 120, Unknown" corresponding to the "Format" column. Whether QT
depends on the receipt of media-packets at the intended-rate in order
to reflect the Movie-Info as appropriately??. Whether the set of SDP
parameters sent alongwith the DESCRIBE-response message from the
Server's end wont be sufficient to reflect this info??.
2) What will be the effect of imposing a substantially high
amount of delay[at the server's end] during the start of a
presentation, i.e., just before streaming the very first packet from
the Server's end ??. Similarly what will be the effect of a lack of
sufficient delay that is supposed to precede the streaming of the very
first media-packet ??. Whether QT is sensitive to these parameters ??.
If so, what are the means to identify these parameters, at the
Server's end ??.
Aside from this, are there any other players (Windows based) which
support streaming (RTSP/RTP) and play back hinted MP4 files??
Thanks,
Kind Regards,
Sachin.

Subject: RE: Mysteries of QT 6.0
Well, the RTSP server resides on 10.114.11.180 & the URLs we have
tried are of the format: rtsp://10.114.11.180/xxxxx.mp4, where xxxxx is the file name.
The funny thing is most of the files which QT is unable to play back
can be easily decoded for their SDP details using some of the tools
which DSS provides (viz. QTSDPGen). Am i missing something here??
The other thing is that these very same files are being played back
admirably clearly using a freely available Linux tool called
"mp4player" available from MPEG4IP. So , the fact that QT 6.0 is
unable to play back these files is very puzzling.
One other thing i should mention is that i have noticed even the most
minutest jitter in inter-packet despatch times (from the normal
playback speed for the file) causes QT to totally miss out on the
formats of the file. The server we have coded is still not the most
accurate in terms of inter-packet delays. Is QT really so delicate &
if so could this be the problem??
Thanks & appreciate the help,
Kind Regards,
Sachin.

Most/all of what you describe should have worked. Can you tell what
sort of URL you're using in the player?
