Streaming MPEG-4 at constant bit rate

Dear List members,

I was wondering if someone could help me out.

I have set up the Streaming Server version 4.1.1 to stream Quicktime hinted movie files, so far I have managed to get it to stream and for the movie to be played back on a Quicktime 6 player running on Windows.

The movie I am using is an MPEG-4 file initially encoded at 1.5 Mega bits /sec and when I play it from the local hard disk it plays back without any pauses / ill effects. For streaming playback I "hinted the clip" using Quitime Pro 6. But when I stream it via ethernet or WiFi ( Wifi is my final target medium ). The first time I play the clip it plays a little, pauses, plays a little, pauses etc etc until the clip ends. If I open up the show movie info I can see a data transfer rate well in excess of the 1.5 Mbps I encoded it at, and it too stops and starts - ie drops to zero , ramps up to full speed etc.

The second time I play the movie, the playback is smooth and uninterrupted, and the Show info property is showing data being transferred, but I get the feeling the actual data has stored cached locally on the windows machine.

My question are thus :

1, Is the pausing behaviour to be expected ? Or is my setup some how wrong ( any tips on correct set up greatly appreciated ).

2, Is it possible to use the Streaming server as a kind of Video On Demand MPEG4 streamer ?

3, Is it possible to set the streaming server up so that it will deliver a constant streaming bit rate, rather than the pulse streaming that I am seeing ?

4, Any advice tips / tricks welcome.

Giles
