Is it possible to use the DSS to do live broadcast with a capture
card? I currently run DSS on a red hat 7.3 pro box with no problems. I
would like to move to live streaming as the next phase. I'm trully
interested in what capture card to use with Linux and any other
hardward/software considerations...

What you need is a QTSS/DSS-compatible broadcaster application, such as
Apple's own
QuickTime Broadcaster (Mac OS X only) or one of the other many
third-party solutions
such as ChannelStorm or Sorenson Broadcaster, etc. etc.
You do the encoding using the broadcaster applications, and then by
placing the active .sdp file in your
Streaming Server's movie folder, the Darwin Streaming Server will
reflect the live broadcast.
if you want the same machine to be the broadcaster/encoder and the
streaming server, then
you can do this on Mac OS X Server (using QTSS 4.x + QuickTime
Broadcaster). The recommended
caputre device are FireWire web cams, DV cameras (firewire), etc.
