Hi Santino!
First of all. 

You cannot play .mp4 files with Mplayer. Yes, I know they say that you can
play MPEG4 with Mplayer. But only DivX. DivX is in 99% of the cases an MPEG4
Advanced Visual Profile track with an AVI as a wrapper and with an different
fourcc. Not an valid MP4 file.

Mplayer cannot play Quicktime movie files without correct codec. (ex.
Sorenson Video, etc)
I know that Mplayer says that you can actually play .mp4 files. But remember
that the mp4 filetype implantation is new in Mplayer and may not function
very well. 


As for hinting and watching Quicktime based material.
There is always a way for you.
