iTunes MP3 files for QTSS4, Apache - iPod compatible?

All,

I'm running OSX 10.1.1 with Apache and QTSS4

I used iTunes to generate MP3 files for QTSS4 playlist streaming by setting the
iTunes->Preferences->Advanced->Music Folder Location to an iTunes
folder I created in the /Library/QuickTimeStreaming/Movies/iTunes

I'd also prefer to use the same MP3 images for linked files (ala <a href-my.mp3> inside
HTML pages hosted by my Apache. So, inside /Library/WebServer/Documents
I created a soft link back to /Library/QuickTimeStreaming/Movies/itunes

I'd also like to keep the iTunes folder iPod compatible to allow hot sync.

so far so good, but I came across an issue. Notably, when iTunes compresses files
it uses non-unix compatible filename characters, like spaces and single quotes,
accent graves, etc. I generated a perl script to change all non compatible chars
to underscores, though I fear this might cause other issues:

My question is this: can I somehow refer to the iTunes generated filenames/dirs
from within an Apache HTML page - without alterring the filenames? If I have
to rename the files - will this confuse iPod's ability to hot sync from the iTunes folder?
If I instead make soft links to each file (like track01.mp3) will this mess up
iPod hot sync as well.

I realize my question is a bit outside QTSS4 realm, though I suspect many would
like to minimize storage on their servers for MP3's and maintain compatiblity with
Apache, QTSS4, and iPod in the process.

Anyone want to ship me an iPod for experiment? I promise I'll return it - no really.... :-)

thanks,
brian.
