RE: connecting realplayer basic to the darwin strm server

Hi Vijay:
Wish I had a dollar for everytime I've seen this question come up in the
last year...

DSS (open source QTSS) requires files to be in QT File Format (e.g., typical
.mov extension files with the "atom" file structure) with "hint traks"; this
is the only file format/content QTSS will serve. There are many file
formats (such as .avi) which can be CONVERTED to hinted .mov files (using QT
Player Pro or Cleaner 5, etc), and then served by DSS. In QT, what is meant
by "supported" is there is a way to convert the file format into hinted .mov
file format, which can then be served.

As far as players, I have played (hinted) .mov files with QT Player 4/5 from
Real Server 8, but can't use RealPlayer with .mov files on DSS. DSS and RS
both use RTSP but in slightly different ways -- and RS is more complex
because they add RSTP "OPTIONS" and "SUBSCRIBE", which are useful because of
their "SureStream" multi-rate files. I've also heard that RP-RS have a
"secret handshake" that prevents you from using your own "open source" or
home grown client from connecting to it.
