question about playlists

i have successfully implemented quicktime streaming server on a Blue&White G3. i have a question about how the mp3 playlists are implemented. when the server and playlists are running, do they just run continuously as a service or do they only run when they are accessed. the reason i ask is because whenever i come into a stream in the morning, it appears to start at the first album listed as opposed to somewhere else.

additionally, i have my server set to play the songs continuously as sequentially to random.
