Yes, I was referring to RealOne on Windows. I did uninstall
QuickTime, and now the AAC stream will not play. With QuickTime, when I open
the reference movie in RealOne Player, the audio plays fine. Without
QuickTime, I get the message "RealOne Player needs to download new software
to play this clip". And, downloading from within RealOne does not work, as
you need a complete QuickTime install.

So, I guess RealOne can play QT files in some cases, but only if QT
is already installed. This does not do me much good, as I'm trying to target
computers that do not have QT installed, in addition to those that do. Yes,
I know QuickTime is "superior", but try to explain that to millions of PC
people that don't have it and don't want it...I don't have the time!

I am streaming my AAC over both rtsp and http, so the transport is
not an issue.

According to Kuniyousi, the MPEG4 codecs and file formats that QTB
generates for live streams for QTSS are incompatible with Real and Windows
Media. This seems very shortsighted on Apple's part. Why go with a
proprietary version of a vendor-independent codec? It's like having a
Panasonic vhs tape that won't play in a Sony deck.... Apple, just please get
all the MPEG4 technology working on a PC without QuickTime.

With 3-4% hardware market share, Apple has to be sensitive that its
hold on the streaming video market is somewhat tenuous, and should make sure
its MPEG4 streaming products are compliant and interoperable.

It's a tough sell in a PC centric organization (most are) to try and
get and XServe/QTSS/QTB if it only works with QuickTime players. Apple, get
Real!

p.s.-if anyone finds a way to play QTB/QTSS files on a PC without
QT, please let me know.....
