Thanks Billy. Now understood. Still, crashing browsers should be considered
undesirable  behavior. My feature request for a future version of QT Pro
would be that if you edit a hinted movie and try to save it, it offers to
regenerate the hint track rather than quietly saving a movie  guaranteed to
crash QT on both Mac and Windows.

In  any case, now I know how to avoid the problem for  the future.
