Chances are there was a money issue. Even QT Streaming Server is free, usually the hardware and most definitely the bandwidth is not. From what I understand how these deals work is that the technology developer, in this case Apple, provide the expertise, often times the hardware and software plus exposure to the content provider through their players (remember the "Channels" in QT 4 and "TV" button in QT 5?). On the other side, the content provider agrees to, well, provide content and also give exposure to the technology developer.

In sum, it's a win-win situation. Apple/QuickTime gains exposure through big media providers, and big media providers gain more viewers once the technology is implemented and gets widely deployed.

I am not saying it's a good or bad scheme, but rather, it tends to be a common practice. You can see these kinds of agreements in the "Favorites" on Windows Media Player and Real Player.

I have no knowledge nor I need to know why NPR pulled off from the deal, but IMHO it is a blow to QuickTime if NPR was the one that pulled off. I think a similar case happened when the BBC stopped using QuickTime for their World News live stream.

Hopefully these big media guys decided to use standards like MPEG-4 in the future.
