If you're getting a 404 error, and you're certain that the movie is
spelled correctly (in your RTSP request), and that the movie does exist
in your movies directory, then the problem is likely that (1) your
QuickTIme Player's Streaming Transport setting is set to HTTP (port
80), and that (2) you are running QTSS from a box that happens to have
an HTTP Web server running.
Work-arounds are either to (1) Disable the Web server on the machine
and enable HTTP Streaming within the QTSS Server settings, or (2)
switch your QuickTime Player's Streaming Transport setting from HTTP
over to UDP (port 554).
For a quick test, you could try leaving your QT CLient's Streaming
Transport setting set to HTTP (port 80), but then just embed a :554
into your RTSP url for testing purposes to quickly determine if it was
the port problem conflicting with a web server on your same machine:

Ok well I have Darwin now on a linux box. When I go from my web page I
keep getting the same error 404 not found. The sample_300kbit.mov is
there.
