George & Hans & Thomas,
Thank you for your suggestions.
I had another reply that gave me some ideas, and my condition became
stranger. I don't know if I'm getting closer or farther from my goal. This
is a two-part reply.
[Part 1]
I've got the QTSS up and running, it's just that nothing seems to go
out, so I took his suggestion to turn off the firewall. Here's where it gets
weird. For the first time ever, when I went to the sharing preference, my
Personal web server was actually running. Until now, every time I've ever
tried to turn it on, it's been permanently "starting..." and never comes all
the way on. So, now I have Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing on
and running.
I tried listening in iTunes, but still didn't hear anything, and I
started considering his comments about Apache. I've never used it and had
never thought that it was even on, but I remember a couple of days ago, when
I logged back on as my user, I saw a message flash by that Apache was
started. So, I went and unchecked the box in QTSS to use Port 80.
[Part 2 -- going down a different path]
Anyway, I've got the firewall off, now, and I've turned off web sharing, and
I've gone back to port 80. And, now, when I start my playlist, I get an
error that another process is using that port. (Is there a place to go to
stop Apache?) If I go to the port screen again and uncheck port 80 and then
go to start the playlist, now I can get my playlist started, but I go into
iTunes and try to connect to http://myaddress/~chuckbo (where /chuckbo is my
mountpoint). Thomas' suggestion included the tilde in the connection path; I
hadn't seen that in any documentation. I notice that it seems significant to
iTunes. If I leave it off, the name's added to iTunes but nothing plays;
when I include the tilde in the connection path, I get a dialog box that
iTunes is connection
but it never makes the connection. I'm trying to check
out all of the suggestions that come my way, but I'm getting confused
because they don't always seem to quite agree.
Let me verify, please, that if I'm broadcasting QTSS on this machine using
Jaguar, I should be able to test it out by opening that stream in iTunes. Is
this correct? If not, maybe I actually got it working somewhere along the
line but never knew it.
