RE:Multicast Relay SDP Question

Alan:

If your companies WAN is multicast enabled, then the sdp file can be anywhere on the WAN. In a multicast enabled WAN, you could have one streaming server set up as a multicast relay and all clients could tune in on the multicast sdp file. That multicast sdp file can be loaded from a web, ftp or file server. It could be e-mailed to clients. You could also create a reference movie from the sdp file and post it to web, ftp, file or mail servers.

Many routers do not have multicast enabled. If multicast is not enabled across your router(s), you will have to have a QTSS on each local subnet set up as a multicast relay. Then users on the local subnet(s) will have to use a multicast sdp file (as stated above). If you have multiple subnets, each with their own QTSS multicast relay, and use the SAME multicast IP address on all of the relays, you could distribute a single multicast sdp file. However, if you are using different multicast addresses, each will need a sdp file that references the appropriate multicast IP address and port numbers.

Hope this helps...

Greetings, everyone. I hope this isn't too obvious.

I understand what needs to be done to relay a unicast from a source to a
destination, and then have the destination forward it to a multicast
address. My question is this... the modified SDP file at the destination
(where i replace the "c=In IP etc..." with the multicast address and ports)
that allows people to "tune in" to the multicast--- does that need to be
placed on a web server within the destination's network, or can it be on
any web server within my company's WAN. I just want to ensure that people
at the destination are actually tuning in to a multicast address on their
LAN, and not an address at the location of the source QT stream, for
example.

Thanks
