Apple didn't buy them off; when I mentioned the MP4 license I was
talking about the royalty fees from them. Sorry for being vague. Of
course if you used a different codec such as Sorensen or something,
you won't have such fees.
Sorry to appear obtuse, but I can't find any instructions on Apple's
Quicktime web pages, or in the QTSS Admin Guide, that say I have to
pay to use mp4.
Disclaimer: IANAL, but
invites me to obtain a copy of the licensing agreement by overnight shipping...
but also has a .ppt overview of the system which contains the royalty
rates, which seem to be around $0.25 per encoder, hardware or
software, and for decoders $0.25 video, $0.15 data (including
non-video sound?) Also rates from one tenth of a cent per hour for
"data" up to 2 or 4 cents per hour or movie for video.
At the moment are we living under?
Grace Period:
Jan 1 2000 - Dec 31 2003
Parties who sign the licence within the first 6 months during
which the licence is offered will pay no royalties on licensed
products sold during this period.
Expect alarm bells to start ringing in about 11 months from now...
I'm not sure where you go to pay the music-related royalties;
anybody know that?
Down here we have APRA, the Australiasian Performing Rights
Association which takes care of royalties for all live performances
and broadcasting of recorded music. I guess the RIAAor ASCAP would do
that for Nth America?
