RE:Problems getting QTSS/broadcaster and HELIX working together

Helix is based on older Darwin Streaming Server Open Source Code. Because of this it doesn't support new features such as RTSP Announcements (aka "Auto Unicast Announce").

So, to use Helix with a live QuickTime broadcaster, you have to do it the old way. After making sure Helix is configured properly, you can start a Unicast broadcast, but then need to save the .sdp file locally and transfer it to the correct directory on the Helix server (i.e. via ftp). You can manually save the sdp file in QuickTime Broadcaster by selecting "Export" from the File menu.

You might want to refer to:

Hope this helps,

After reading the faqs, manuals and googled my head off i decided to
drop this issue here.

While trying to setup several live streams i keep running into several
problems.

The setup is a Helix 9 server running on linux 2.4.18 serving multiple
sources both rm files and qt files.
The server gets its sources from real-encoders and Quicktime broadcasters.
The encoders running realproducer have no problems, the problems are all
regarding traffic comming from quicktime encoders and or QTSS

When i use all the local stuff on the Xserver it works smoothly, i am
very impressed with the performance....
But.,.. as i have to stream quicktime and real from about 4 locations i
would like to use a single source (from the clients point of view).

If all your clients are coming to a web server, you can embed links to both the real and quicktime servers on the same web page without having the both streams come from the same server. You user's shouldn't have to care where the streams are originating. They will appear to come from a single source - the web page.

...

I also tried to use the default relay function on QTSS..(relay via tcp)
no result
Also there is no traffic going to the Helix server, or does traffic
start as soon as a user is connected properly?

I believe that is the default behavior for Helix.

...

regarding this file...( and again the documentation is not very clear)
1. playlist_file... as i am only live encoding and not on demand, why
would i need a playlist?

You don't. Playlists simulate a live stream from on-demand content stored in files on the streaming server.

2, sdp reference... tried to use the live.sdp, and live.mov, but when
and is there a file created with extension .mov? as far as i can see
this file is not created.

The .sdp file can be Exported from Broadcaster. Because Helix doesn't support automatic announcements, you have to manually copy this file to the appropriate directory on the Helix server (see QuickTime support documentation for Helix). Helix lacks support for other features of QTSS 4.x including skip protection.

How do i place a .sdp file on the server when no connection is made and
therefor no sdp file is "uploaded", presume the file is placed when a
connection is established.

You have to copy the file over a separate connection (i.e. ftp). It won't be copied automatically for you.
