Re: help needed with QT6, QTSS and MP3 Playlists...

"Place the .m3u or .pls file in the same directory as your web site and link to it just as you would link any other downloadable file. Most web browsers are configured to open .m3u and .pls files using the user's MP3 player."

Now I don't mean to be a "rules lawyer" (if I can usurp the term), but this *does not work* with QT6...

QuickTime 6 Player was not intended to be used as a streaming icecast/shoutcase MP3 client. Although there does exist an unsupported icy:// url feature, I would instead recommend that you keep your .m3u file using http://your.ip.addr:8000/mountpoint so that you don't break compatibility with regular MP3 streaming clients, such as Real Player, Windows Media, WinAmp, iTunes, etc.

Changing my "one line m3u text file" to read:

icy://your.ip.addr:8000/mountpoint

worked for QT6, but broke RealPlayer.

Now reading the QTSS Admin manual further, I see John, that on page 28 that QTSS "is intended for shoutcast/icecast-compatible live streams (such as those created by a streaming playlist)..." so something is not right.

Can you elaborate?

Many thanks again for the QT6 fix!

Why are you insisting on trying to use QuickTime Player as your streaming MP3 client? iTunes is much better suited for the purpose.

If you MUST use QuickTime Player to stream MP3 audio, then you might want to consider encapsulating your MP3 audio file within a hinted QuickTime file (load the mp3 file into QuickTime Pro, exported as Hinted QuickTime Movie). then create a QTSS Movie Playlist referencing the hinted movie (that uses the MP3 audio codec). This would then work and play fine in QuickTime Players on Windows and Macs.

In general, if you want best compatibility for non-hinted MP3 streaming, then use .m3u files with an http://-style url, and use MP3 streaming clients like iTunes, Real Player, and so forth.
