Re: Firewall killed it

Hi.

I claimed recently that my DSS had simply stopped streaming, and got some
responses asking me to check that my server's isp, or my client machines,
had not introduced a firewall.

Well I've been away before sorting it out, but back now, and it seems that
my client machine is indeed behind a firewall now. Thanks IT for telling
us!!

Anyhow, I have now been asked to let them know what I want opening up again,
they say for streaming quicktime, the server to client traffic, is udp, but
need to know the port range. We set it up on port 80 originally. That the
only one I need to tell them?

TCP ports 554 and 80 UDP ports 6970 - 6999

If you wish to access the Perl streaming web admin remotely, then tell them to open up TCP port 1220

Likewise, if you intend to do MP3 broadcasting/playlist reflecting, then you might want to open up TCP port 8000.

Secondly, the client to server traffic apparently is in http. Is this
correct? And what is the port range I need to tell them about on this one?

It is only HTTP when the QT Client's "Streaming Transport" setting is set to HTTP (port 80).

Finally, how widespread is this sort of problem going to be? If we cannot
see the streams as developers, what chance do our site's viewers have?

First of all, you as a developer need to coordinate with your ISP so that the widest audience can view your stream by opening up the appropriate TCP and UDP ports.

Secondly, to make your streams most accessible, you need to create QT Reference movies and include the appropriate HTML embed and object tags in your web pages so that users of both Macintosh and Windows web browser will be able to access your QT Streams via the QT Plugin in the web browsers.

Here's a page that has lots of tips, as well as links to more documentation on QT embedding in a web page for doing RTSP streaming.
